Cemetery in York Township, Sandusky County

I have been trying to find a cemetery that is described in a book of the history of Sandusky County. It reads:

The society thus formed was known as the Free-will Baptist church of York township. Meetings were held at the houses of Jeremiah Brown and John Mugg until the log-school house (the first one on the south ridge) was built. In 1855 the meeting-house on the south ridge was built, but the organization has been losing its membership gradually, until but one remains—Mrs. Jeremiah Smith. Sunday-school continues to be held in the meeting-house during the summer months. The cemetery, which is one of the oldest in the north part of the township, was donated by John Calvin. Tryphena C. Smith was the first person buried in this cemetery. This church, in its early history, being the only religious society, collected, into its membership nearly everybody in the neighborhood.

Well, I am related to Tryphena's parents, Jeremiah Smith and Experience Mills Smith and have been trying to find dates on their family and the date that Tryphena passed away. I know this cemetery is very old and the church doesn't seem to be in existence anymore that I can find.

Does anyone have any knowledge whatsoever on this topic? I'm in Denver or I would be driving around looking!!! Thanks-

Jenn

Sandusky Co. Burial

Postby OhioCem on Fri Jul 03, 2009 8:03 am

Hello Jenn, sorry for the delay, but finally had some time to do some checking. I found an entry on Find A Grave for Tryphena Smith, at Wales Corner Cemetery. There's no data or photo, but perhaps an email sent to a person at Sandusky Co. Genealogical society will find a volunteer close enough to site and willing to travel there and find your ancestors graves. I realize you are too far away to drive there, but the directions might help some one in the area locate the cemetey. Take US20, east of Clyde .7 mi. to County Rd. 175, turn left, go 2.2 mi. Cemetery is located on the corner of CR 175 & CR 288. The cemetery is located east of Clyde, Sandusky Co., York Twp., Ohio. Here's a link to a website that might prove helpful:

Good luck with your search. Robert
